The History of Anorexia Nervosa
Miss A
One of the first cases of anorexia was Miss A and she was one of the earliest anorexia nervosa studies. Miss A was submitted to Sir William Gull in 1866. She was only 17 and had lost about 33 pounds. She was 5 ft 5 and weighed only 82 pounds. Her physical condition was mostly normal, she just refused to eat and was starving herself. He tried many medications and diets, but none of them seemed to work. Sometimes Miss A would eat a lot in a short period of time, but this would not happen often. As she got better and older, she started looking more her age (21) and a lot more healthy. But the photographs of her when she was 17, she looked much more like she was 30 years of age. Through January 1866 and March 1868, Miss A made a full recovery and went from 82 to 128 pounds.

Miss A, of course, is only one of the many cases of anorexia nervosa. There are many other cases that were studied, I just found her the most interesting.
